The Guitar

The Gibson Les Paul Jr or Junior was originally introduced in 1954 and it was intended on being a quality, but entry level guitar.  It was selling for $120 and featured a single tone knob

and a single P-90 or "soap box" pick-up.  It was a single cutaway, but later in 1958 Gibson released the double cutaway version.  Many variations of this popular guitar were also later introduced.

Throughout the 1960's and 1970's the Gibson Les Paul Junior became a very popular guitar amongst blues and rock guitarists.  It's single pick-up sound was very distinct while it's sleek look and simplicity were attractive to guitarists.

The Les Paul Junior originally only had a single cutaway, as released in 1954.  There was a double cutaway edition that was released in 1958.  There were many common color shemes for the guitar including Cherry red, the famous "TV Yellow" (which was used for making guitars look more vibrant on black and white TV broadcasts) and of course vintage cherry burst.  In 1961, there was a variation of the body style because of a disagreement between Gibson and Les Paul.  These models would later become known as the SG Junior, which kind of looks like a trident in comparison to the standard edition junior.

The Les Paul is still offered in many different variations.  Gibson made has a U.S.A edition of the guitar which offers a slim-tapered neck.  These models have many different qualities including single and double cutaways.  The Gibson custom shop maintains a period-correct Junior which has it's historic and VOS features.  They have an extremely large neck which is sometimes referred to as a "baseball bat" neck amongst guitarist.

Many famous artists have had their very own custom edition Gibson Les Paul Junior including John Lennon, Peter Frampton, Bob Marley played a Les Paul Special and Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong.  Billy Joe Armstrong is of the most recent.  His custom line comes in several vintage colors:  Sunburst, Vintage White and Ebony.  They are all based on the '54-'57 Les Paul Juniors.  Most unique of his line would be the specially designed "H-90" pickup which is supposed to be noise cancelling, but basically just offers higher output or "fatter" sound.

The Les Paul Special has a similar body shape, but is equipped with 2 P-90 pickups and Gibson's standard 4-knob, 3-way switch electronics.
